    Condition: Fair. 1932. 45 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth. Spine strip is missing. Inscription to front pastedown. Pages are lightly tanned and thumbed at the edges, with light foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards have been moderately rub worn, with noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed. Spine strip is missing. Tanning to edges.

The publication is an excerpt from the then still unfinished and unpublished work that was to eventually be called "Finnegans Wake", then referred to as "Work in Progress". This material concerning the characters Shem and Shaun had been previously published in 1929 as "Tales Told of Shem and Shaun", by the Black Sun Press. Binding with light wear including some minor scratches and smudging to boards. Sunning to spine, with some light bumping to the head and tail. Interior with some light water stains to the front and rear endpapers, and first pages. Previous owner's name in pen at front free endpaper. Some light sporadic smudges and pencil marks throughout, with light age toning to pages. Binding and interior in very good- to very good overall condition.

  • Pub's Boards. Condition: Vg. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Thus. Originally published in a now very rare limited edition, this is the first trade edition. The dustwrapper is chipped with some loss at the head of the spine panel, and is slightly chipped where it folds over the corners of the boards, and it is rubbed and somewhat worn on the extremities. The wrapper is not price clipped. The paper boards are very slightly and very lightly spotted; ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, and there is some browning to the endpapers. The contents are clean and bright.

Issued a Criterion Miscellany No. 26. This 26 page volume is one of several fragments from Joyce's Work in Progress series that was eventually published as Finnegans Wake in 1939.

A fair copy, once belonged to British writer, historian, and biographer Una Pope-Hennessy. She was the daughter of Sir Arthur Birch, and married Major (later Major-General) Richard Pope-Hennessy in 1910.
